Breville BOV800XL vs. Cuisinart TOB-195

Anyone looking for the best toaster oven is often faced with choosing between the Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven or the Cuisinart TOB-195.  They are both great toaster ovens, so making a decision can be challenging.  This post, therefore, will compare these two toaster ovens so that anyone considering the two may have an easier time deciding.

Quick Review of the Breville BOV800XL

The Breville BOV800XL is a large capacity counter top convection oven.  It is considered by many, including us, to be the finest of all toaster ovens.  Below are some of the highlights of the BOV800XL:

  • Powerful 1800 watt toaster oven
  • Toasts and bakes excellently with it’s Element IQ technology
  • Versatile with it’s large capacity and 9 preset cooking functions (Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Broil, Pizza, Cookies, Reheat, and Warm)

Quick Review of the Cuisinart TOB-195

The Cuisinart TOB-195 is also a large capacity counter top convection oven.  Like the Breville Smart Oven, many people also consider this to be the best toaster oven on the market.  Here are some of the highlights of the TOB-195:

  • Exact Heat™ sensor maintains precise oven temperature
  • Heats up to 500° (one of the few that goes this high)
  • Toasts and bakes wonderfully
  • Versatile with its large capacity and multiple cooking functions (Pizza/Bake, Broil, Toast, Convection; Bagel, Reheat, and Defrost buttons)

While both toaster ovens would be a great choice there are some noteworthy differences.  Below is a comparison of how the two stack up to each other.

People find both of these toaster ovens to be aesthetically pleasing and give praise to how they both look.  The main difference, however, is that while the Breville BOV800XL is housed in stainless steel, the Cuisinart TOB-195 is not completely stainless steel (only the front panels are stainless steel).  Therefore, because consumers generally prefer all stainless steel appliances, the Breville Smart Oven wins this category.

The Winner: Breville BOV800XL

In regard to the functionality and ease of use, it isn’t really much of a contest – the Breville Smart Oven is the clear winner.  The Breville BOV800XL is simply easier to operate and has more user friendly features.

For example, the automatic pull out rack on the BOV800XL makes it much easier to take out food while the oven is hot.  The TOB-195 doesn’t have this feature and so you must pull out the rack like you would do with a normal wall oven.

Along the same lines, the door handle on the BOV800XL is larger and designed better so that opening and closing the door is easier than the TOB-195.  One of the biggest complaints people have with the Cuisinart TOB-195 (and TOB-155) is that the area behind the door handle gets very hot and because the handle rests close to this area, it is easy to accidentally touch it with your fingers or knuckles and burn yourself.  Therefore, you need to be much more careful handling the TOB-195 than the BOV800XL.

Another characteristic people find more appealing with the Smart Oven over the Cuisinart is the removable crumb tray.  To access the crumb tray on the TOB-195, you have to do so from the back of the unit.  This is obviously less convenient than Breville’s front access crumb tray.

Both units have an automatic shut off system in place, but the difference with the BOV800XL is that it will shut the oven off automatically after each toasting or cooking cycle.  The TOB-195 does automatically shut off after the toasting cycle has completed, but for the bake or broil functions that use the timer, it will stay on and ring until the oven is manually turned off.  As a safety measure, however, the Cuisinart oven will automatically shut off after 4 hours of continuous use.

While both models have digital controls and are both pretty straight forward, people do tend to have more trouble figuring out how to use the controls on the Cuisinart TOB-195 as there were more reports of people having to check the user manual for guidance with this.

The Winner: Breville BOV800XL

Toasting & Cooking

This is one area where both toaster ovens perform really well and we think you would be happy with the results from both units.  In terms of baking, the Cuisinart TOB-195 has a slight advantage as it goes up to 500° where as the Breville BOV800XL only goes up to 450°.  However, we would give a slight advantage to the Breville for its toasting ability as it seemed to get more positive reviews in this.

The winner: Tie

At a price difference of around $100 (check current prices for the actual difference), it is a no contest.  The Cuisinart TOB-195 is more affordable and therefore takes this category.  This price difference is also a significant reason why some people choose the TOB-195 over the BOV800XL and feel it is a better toaster oven for the price.

The Winner: Cuisinart TOB-195

Customer Service

With regard to customer service, there are more complaints found in the Breville reviews than for Cuisinart.  Most of the complaints people have with Breville comes from dealing with returned units that were defective.  Customers found the process to be a bit lengthy and thought they should have received their new/replacement oven sooner.  It should be noted, however, that many people raved about Amazon’s level of service, which is why we recommend purchasing through them.  If you have any problems with your toaster oven, it is generally much easier to deal with Amazon than having to deal with the manufacturer directly.

The Winner: Cuisinart

Consumer Rating

The information and numbers presented below are based on consumer ratings and customer reviews from on May 19, 2012.

At the time of this writing, 708 out of 813 people have given the Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven a rating of 4 or 5 stars for an 87% positive approval rating.

The Cuisinart TOB-195, on the other hand, has an 88% positive approval rating with 382 out of 433 people giving the toaster oven a 4 or 5 star rating.

Even though, percentage wise, the Cuisinart has a 1% advantage, the Breville received double the amount of 5 stars from people.  In other words, 604 people gave the Breville BOV800XL 5 stars compared to 300 people giving the Cuisinart TOB-195 5 stars.  Therefore, the edge goes to the Smart Oven for the sheer number of high ratings.

The Winner: Breville BOV800XL

While most consumers find both models to be excellent toaster ovens, no other toaster oven combines both functionality and cooking quite like the BOV800XL Smart Oven.  In short, it is something special.

  • Philip Kalinowsky says:

I had the Breville for 18 months and loved it – right up to the day it no longer heated. For $250 I expected that the oven would last considerably longer. Would not recommend for that reason.

  • Bruce E. Bailey says:

Have owned the Breville Smart Oven approximately 3 years. It has served me well up until now. However, the Start/Cancel button when pushed now causes erratic selection responses which ultimately results in the oven not starting at all. Though research, I have found this is a common problem for the Breville. The Breville works fine for 18 months or even up to 2 years and then either quits altogether or has control issues. The common expectation from the consumer is that it should last longer since it is a higher end model.
