The Black & Decker CTO6301 is housed in stainless steel with black trim around the front, which will blend in nicely with many kitchens.  The glass door is curved, along with the rear oven wall, so that it maximizes the usable space inside.

This is a large capacity oven, so it does leave a large footprint.  Therefore, double check your measurements so that you have adequate counter space.

Toasting & Cooking

Because this is a large toaster oven, it makes it very versatile.  It can cook everything from small items to large ones that require 9 x 13 inch pans (without handles).  It is also powered by 1500 watts, so it can get the job done and doesn’t require you to have to use your wall oven that requires more time and energy.  Therefore, the CTO6301 can easily act as a 2nd oven.

The Black & Decker CTO6301 has 9 cooking functions: Bake, Convection Bake, Broil, Toast, Bagel, Pizza , Frozen Snacks, Potatoes, and Cookies.  The functions come with preset times and temperatures, however, they can be adjusted manually to your liking.

Definitely one of the stronger aspects about this toaster oven is its baking ability.  Casseroles, pizzas, muffins, biscuits, etc., all come out very nicely.  The heating elements are both quick and responsive.  Both the top 2 and bottom 2  elements can run simultaneously with the bake or convection bake mode.  Additionally, you have the option to use the convection fan for faster cooking times, which is very convenient.  Customers also mentioned that the fan is fairly quiet compared to others.

The broil mode also works well.  However, the convection fan can not be used with this function.  The convection fan only works with the bake mode.  Despite this, users were happy with the results.

While most people were happy with how the CTO6301 performed with the other cooking functions, the toast function was the one area that people had a slight issue with.  Users felt that this unit takes a bit long to toast.  Many were satisfied with how the toast turned out, though.  There is also 7 shade levels to choose from, so you can experiment to find one that suits your taste.

Consumers also liked that there is a function specifically dedicated for toasting bagels.  This function works well for bagels as it toasts the top side, but gently warms the bottom.

Using the Black & Decker CTO6301

At this price range, the Black & Decker CTO6301 is one of the lesser expensive models with digital controls.  However, the digital controls are not as convenient to use as some would like.

The issue people have with the digital controls comes when setting the temperature and time.  Therefore, we will go over this here, so that you have a better idea.

Selecting Cooking Temperature & Time: To select the cooking time or temperature, you need to first push the cooking function you wish to use.  By doing this, the preset time and temperature will be initiated for the function chosen.

The presets are as follows:

  • Toast: Shade level is preset to 4 (medium)
  • Bagel: Shade level is preset to 4 (medium)
  • Bake: Preheats and cooks to a set temperature of 350° and a time of 30 minutes
  • Broil: Broils at preset temperature of 450° and a time of 20 minutes
  • Cookies: Bakes at set temperature of 350° and a time of 12 minutes
  • Pizza: Cooks at a set temperature of 400° and a time of 20 minutes
  • Frozen Snacks: Cooks at a set temperature of 400° and a time of 6 minutes
  • Potato: Cooks at a set temperature of 400° and a time of 45 minutes

To change the temperature: If don’t want to use the preset temperature, you will need to immediately press the up or down arrow key until you reach the desired temperature.

To change the time:  If you also need to change the time, you will need to press the Time button and then use the arrow keys to reach the time you want.

Warning! You only have 5 seconds to change both the temperature and time. More than 5 seconds time and the unit will change back to the default setting.

After you have set the desired temperature and time (within 5 seconds), you then press the start/stop button.

As you can see, it’s not that the process is terribly complicated, but rather it’s the short time constraint which causes the frustration.

While the time constraint on the time and temperature setting is a bother to some, the actual buttons themselves are clearly marked and easy to locate.  People also like the fact that the timer can be set for up to 2 hours.

Cleaning the CTO6301 is also very easy with its nonstick interior walls and removable crumb tray.  The crumb tray also slides out the front for easy access.

Lastly, consumers mentioned that you need to be very careful when opening the oven door.  It doesn’t have a spring or retention device to slow it down.  Therefore, if you are not careful, it will slam down on your countertop.

The pizza pan, baking pan/drip tray, and broil rack that come with the toaster oven are made of average quality and so they are a bit flimsy.

Customer Wishes & Complaints

One of the biggest complaints found with this toaster oven is that the exterior becomes very hot and can cause minor burns if touched.  It should be noted though that this is a common toaster oven complaint found with virtually all toaster ovens.  As long as you take the proper safety precautions, you should be fine.

Even so, the CTO6301 does appear to get hotter than others.   This is due to the thin sheet metal that was used in constructing the unit, which is why the unit is fairly light for its large size.  It’s also the reason why it is less insulated.

A good alternative to the Black & Decker CTO6301 is the Oster TSSTTVMNDG.  It’s generally cheaper, has almost all of the same cooking features, including the convection fan, is also a large capacity oven with digital controls, and more importantly, doesn’t get as hot as the CTO6301.  Click here to learn more

Another common complaint found was that customers wanted to see this model come with a back light on the display screen.  If your kitchen or room is not well lit, you may have trouble reading the display screen.  Therefore, it is advisable to have sufficient lighting when using this toaster oven.

There is also no interior light, so again make sure you have plenty of light to ensure you can see your food inside well.

It may come as a surprise that a large toaster oven such as this doesn’t have an interior light, but this is actually common.  In fact, very few toaster ovens these days come with interior lights.  If you wish to have one with an interior light, check out the Oster TSSTTVMNDG.

The next common gripe found has to do with the sound of the alert system.  The oven will beep with each push of a button and will also beep 3 times when the time is up.  Some said that this beeping sound was a bit too loud.  Others, however, liked the loud sound as they could easily hear the oven from another room.

Finally, as with many of the lesser expensive toaster ovens, you will find people complaining about the durability and longevity of the product.  Many people were not happy to learn that their toaster oven had died shortly after the 1 year warranty.

Summary of the Black & Decker CTO6301

The Black & Decker CTO6301 is a good all around toaster oven in the mid price range.  While it does have some inconveniences as mentioned earlier, it is hard to find a toaster oven that doesn’t (the Breville Smart Oven is as close to perfect as you can find).  Therefore, all things considered, many feel the CTO6301 is a good buy for the price.
