Toasting & Cooking

There are 9 cooking functions that you can choose from on the CTO7100B:  Rotisserie, Toast, Bagel, Bake (with optional convection fan), Broil, Cookies, Pizza, Frozen Snacks, and Potato.

Chefs and cooking enthusiasts know the secret to juicy and succulent meat is the rotisserie. It should be no surprise then that this feature is the primary attraction to this toaster oven.  By continuously rotating the meat, the rotisserie keeps the juices circulating, so the meat doesn’t dry out.  Therefore, this is a great feature to have and makes the Black & Decker CTO7100B stand out from the rest as only a few toaster ovens have this ability.

Customers found the rotisserie to work well, but mentioned that it can struggle with chickens weighing over 3 pounds (user manual states a maximum weight of 3.5 pounds for chicken).  Therefore, it works best for small chickens only.  Many full size chickens are probably a bit too large for the rotisserie to handle.  However, if you tie the legs with cooking twine, you can get away with a bit larger of a bird.   Pork and beef roasts work perfectly and turn out delicious.  See the manufacturer’s cooking guide below for more information on recommended meat sizes and cooking times.

Rotisserie Cooking Guide

Users also spoke highly of the Bake and Broil functions of this toaster oven/rotisserie.  Equipped with a convection fan, baking is made convenient as it speeds up the cooking process and thus eliminates the need many times to use a larger wall oven.  Plus, because of its smaller size, the unit heats up faster and uses less energy.

With respect to toasting with the Black & Decker CTO7100B, reviews were a little mixed.  On the whole, most people felt it toasted adequately.  Some, however, felt a simple toaster would be a better alternative for toasting and suggested using this toaster oven more for the baking and rotisserie features.  These feelings stem largely from the fact that the oven takes longer to toast than a toaster does.  However, in general, toaster ovens do take a bit longer to toast than toasters do.

Additionally, some customers thought there needed to be more levels of browning to choose from as the difference from one level to the next was too great for some peoples taste.  Users did appreciate though that the oven remembers the last selected shade level (1-7) and the fact that there is a designated function specifically for bagels.

Using the Black & Decker CTO7100B

Using the Black & Decker CTO7100B is straight forward with its clearly labeled push buttons and digital display.  To begin cooking, select the cooking function you wish to use, then push the up or down arrow keys to adjust the temperature.  Once the temperature is set, push the Time button followed by the up or down arrow keys until the desired time is reached (timer goes from 1 to 120 minutes).  After the temperature and time has been set, push the Start/Stop button.

Warning! The cooking function, the temperature and the time must be set within a 5 second time frame or the unit reverts to 0:00.

One of the things customers liked about the functionality of this oven is that it automatically shuts off after each cooking cycle, which is a good safety feature.

It should be noted though that the timer does not start counting down until after it finishes preheating. The oven also beeps 3 times when it has finished the cooking cycle.

Other things to note are the convection fan can be turned on or off at any time and you can also end the cooking cycle at any time.

lastly, customers found the oven easy to clean with its slide out crumb tray (slides out from the front).

Included with the unit is a rotisserie spit (the rod that holds the meat on the rotisserie), forks for securing the food on the spit, a bake/broil pan, a slide rack, and broil rack.

Customer Wishes & Complaints

While customers loved that this toaster oven comes with a rotisserie and that it works well, they really would have liked the interior to be larger so that it could more easily accommodate whole size chickens.  Many felt the 3.5 pound limit was too small and that it made it more challenging to find a good size chicken for the rotisserie.

A few people also found the alert system to be a little difficult to hear.  However, this is usually a debatable topic and really comes down to personal preference as some people like loud sounding beeps and others find loud alert systems annoying.

As with most toaster ovens, this one also gets hot.  However, this is a very common toaster oven complaint.  If you take proper toaster oven safety precautions, you should be just fine.

Lastly, customers would like to see an improvement in the toast function control.  As mentioned earlier, customers found the difference between one shade level to the next a bit too great.

With 81% of the users giving the Black & Decker CTO7100B a rating of 4 or 5 stars, most feel it is hard to go wrong with this toaster oven/rotisserie combo, especially considering the price.  In terms of toasting, there are better models out there.  However, most people felt it toasted adequately.  Therefore, all things considered,  the added benefit of being able to cook with a rotisserie makes the Black & Decker CTO7100B a worthwhile purchase.
