Video Overview of the Breville BOV650XL Smart Oven
As mentioned before, the Breville BOV650XL is very similar to the larger BOV800XL model, but with a couple of differences. The most notable difference is the size of the Compact Smart Oven.
The reduced size is a plus for those that want to save on counter space and a negative for those that wish to cook larger items. It should be noted that many customers felt the size was sufficient for the majority of their cooking needs, but some did say that they wished they had purchased the larger model.
The BOV650Xl Compact Oven also doesn’t have the auto-eject rack that customers love in the BOV800XL model.
Lastly, the Compact Smart Oven doesn’t have the convection fan feature, but most customers said that the toaster oven bakes quickly and evenly even without the convection feature.
Being called the “Ferrari of toaster ovens” by some, the Breville Smart Ovens will look great in any kitchen setting. Its stainless steel appearance will give a nice sparkle and be a fine edition.
Right out of the box, you will quickly realize that the Compact Smart Oven is a top-notch toaster oven and was built to last. It comes with a large stainless steel door handle that is sturdy, cool to the touch, and won’t burn your hands when opening or closing. The glass door spreads across the entire oven giving you a clear view of your food inside. All in all, we think you will be very happy with the quality and look of the BOV650XL.
Toasting & Cooking with the BOV650XL
The advantage the Breville Smart Ovens have over other toaster ovens is its unique Element IQ technology. The technology puts the power in the heating elements at the right time and where it is needed most for the specific cooking task. Thus, it not only delivers perfect results, but also is a great energy saver.
The BOV650XL comes with 8 presets (toast, bagel, bake, roast, broil, pizza, cookies, and reheat) and most customers found them to work perfectly for their food. This is a nice feature because it takes the guesswork out of which temperature and time to set. However, if the presets are not up to your liking, they can be adjusted to your preference and the Smart Oven will remember them for you the next time.
Another cool thing the Smart Oven does is that it adjusts the toasting time automatically to compensate if the oven is still warm from recent use. Therefore, you get perfectly toasted bagels or bread every time.
One thing customers recommended to keep in mind was that because of its compact design, the heat is more concentrated than a large oven, so it may cook your food faster than what you are used to. Therefore, if a recipe calls for 30 – 40 minutes in a regular oven, set it to 30 minutes or a few minutes before just to ensure it doesn’t overcook.
Using the Breville BOV650XL
The Breville Compact Smart Oven has a back-lit LCD screen, which is easy to navigate and the displays can easily be read from across the room. It also illuminates orange during preheat and cooking and turns blue when the cycle is complete. One of the features customers liked about it was the countdown timer. The timer will tell you exactly how much time is left for the toast or food to be ready. Once a cycle has finished, the oven will automatically shut off. Overall, customers found the interface and controls easy to figure out and many didn’t even need to read the manual (we always recommend reading the manual, though).
One of the most liked features the BOV650XL has is the front access crumb tray. Being able to easily pull the tray out from the front makes cleaning so much more convenient then having to pull it out from the back as is the case with other toaster ovens.
One thing to keep in mind is that this is a powerful 1800 watt toaster oven and it does draw a lot of power. Therefore, be mindful of what other appliances you have plugged into the same outlet. You wouldn’t want to be running the toaster oven and a microwave, for example, at the same time.
Unlike the cheap and flimsy racks and pans found in other toaster ovens, the Compact Smart Oven comes with a high quality 10″ x 10″ enamel baking pan, and a 10″ x 10″ enamel broil rack. These accessories are durable and built to last.

Customer Wishes & Complaints
One thing customers would have appreciated was an automatic eject rack. To some this isn’t that important as full ovens don’t have this feature, but we think it would have been a nice touch. See the Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven Review if you wish to have this auto eject rack feature.
Like other toaster ovens, the BOV650XL Compact Smart Oven also doesn’t have an interior light. Many customers felt that at this price point, one should have been included.
Also, similar to complaints found with the Breville BOV800XL, customers would have liked to have seen the dials made of something heavier. Many think the dials feel kind of cheap and should feel stronger at this price.
The rest of the negative reviews had to deal with defective units. Unfortunately, Breville doesn’t have the best record when dealing with this issue. For this reason we recommend purchasing through Amazon.com. They have much better customer service and their prices are consistently the lowest.
Summary of the Breville BOV650XL
If you are looking for a top of the line toaster oven that is small, doesn’t have a convection fan, is easy to use, and cooks and toasts everything beautifully, then this is the best out there.
At a price over $150, it is an investment. But, with its high quality design and superior technology, we think it is worth it. If you’re only interested in toasting, however, you probably don’t need to spend this kind of money.
