Review of the Breville BOV800XL

First impressions are always important and the Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven won’t disappoint you.  The first thing you will notice when you purchase the Breville BOV800XL is it’s attractive design and packaging.  If you are a fan of Mac computers, then opening the BOV800XL may remind you of opening up a new Apple product as numerous customers made this comparison.

Right from the start you can tell that the team at Breville really made a point to make you feel that you have just purchased something luxurious – and at this price point, it should be that way.

Toasting & Cooking

Looking at the Breville BOV800XL, which is attractively housed in reinforced stainless steel, one may be concerned with the large size of the oven.  But, this happens to be one of its greatest features as it makes the oven incredibly versatile.

The interior space is huge!  To get a better idea of the size and scope of things, the Smart Oven can toast up to 6 slices of toast and is spacious enough to cook a 13″ pizza.  Additionally, the oven comes with a 12″ x 12″ baking pan and 12″ x 12″ broiling rack allowing for a plethora of cooking opportunities.

Therefore, because there is so much inside space, you can cook almost anything in it.  In fact, many customers noted that the Smart Oven has almost completely replaced their conventional oven in that they now only use their conventional ovens for very large family meals.

Element IQ – Smart and Energy Efficient Technology

The primary feature that sets the Breville BOV800XL apart from other toaster ovens is its Element IQ technology.  Choosing from 9 preset functions, the Smart Oven takes the guesswork out of setting temperatures and cooking times.

The real difference, however, is that Element IQ provides smarter control over the heat by delivering the right power at the right time.  Similar to how a dimmer in a light switch works to adjust the power, Element IQ puts the power in the 5 heating elements where it is needed most for the specific cooking task.

The preset programs can also be adjusted to your personal preference – something many people liked.  This gives you the flexibility to control your presets to cook the food exactly how you like it.  The Smart Oven will also remember the new settings the next time or until the unit is unplugged for 5 seconds.

Overall, the Element IQ technology was designed to cook to perfection – and that’s what it does!  Additionally, by incorporating the Element IQ technology into the design, the engineers at Breville made the Smart Oven very energy efficient, especially compared with a conventional oven.  It also heats up faster than an oven, which makes it extremely convenient to use.

Using the Breville BOV800XL

Customers found the blue back-lit LCD screen on the Smart Oven easy to operate and read (especially for people who need reading glasses).  The LCD screen shows all cooking settings and counts down the time in minutes. When 10 minutes remain, it begins counting down the seconds also. Upon completion of the cooking cycle, three pleasant-sounding beeps are heard and the timer turns off the oven – it does this for all cycles: toast, bagel, bake, broil, etc.   This is a nice benefit since other high end toasters only turn themselves off after toasting.

The stereo-like control knobs were also very easy for customers to use and most didn’t need to read the manual to figure out how to use them.  As one reviewer said it’s “idiot proof.”  The control knobs work by simply turning them to your desired location.  And with minimum icons and buttons, the interface is clear, clean, and uncluttered.

Another feature loved by Smart Oven users was the auto-eject rack.  The BOV800XL comes with magnetized areas on the inside of the oven door that pull the oven rack about half way out upon opening the door.  This makes it very easy to place items on or remove them without worrying about burning your hands.  A simple, but very nice feature.

Customers also liked the fact that the glass door has indicators printed on the front that tell you which of the 3 rack settings to use.  The rack settings are as follows:

  • Top Rack = Broil
  • Middle Rack = Toast, Cookie, Bagel, Pizza
  • Bottom Rack = Bake, Roast, Reheat, Warm

Like with most ovens, the Smart Oven gets warm.  However, customers appreciated the large door handle as it makes grabbing and opening easy, and also stays cool to the touch.  The door also seals nicely, thus reducing energy waste and the unneeded heating of your home.

In addition, the BOV800XL has nice big rubber no-slip feet that keep the oven elevated about 1″ above the counter top.  So, there is no need to worry about possibly damaging your counter if your surface is susceptible to heat damage.

As mentioned before, the Breville BOV800XL comes with a 13″ round non-stick pizza pan, a 12″ x 12″ enamel broiling rack, and a 12″ x 12″ enamel backing pan.  In addition,  the Smart Oven comes with a handy front access crumb tray, which received praise from the majority of customers as they really enjoy how easy is to clean.  The crumb tray covers the entire bottom of the oven, so it catches everything and is easily removed from the front (as opposed to the back like some toaster ovens).

Other common accessories purchased with the Smart oven include:  Breville bamboo cutting board and the Breville 13″ pizza stone.  Click Here to see details.

Customer Wishes and Complaints

The most common item customers wished the Smart Oven had was an interior light.  Although some said it wasn’t an issue at all, many felt that one should have been included at this price point.  Either way, it would have been nice to have one.

Some people also mentioned that while the control dials look great, there was some room for improvement in how they feel.  They would have preferred something that felt sturdier or firmer.

Many people also complained about the length of the electric cord (3ft), but this is the standard size found with most toaster ovens and is up to code.   On a positive note, many did like that the cord came with a finger hole allowing for an easy way to pull the plug from the socket.

The rest of the reviewers complaints came primarily from dealing with defective units, which needed to be replaced.  Although they were able to get new units, some were unhappy with dealing with Breville and the time it took them to ship a new oven out.  That being said, most spoke very highly about the customer service received from Amazon.   This is why we recommend purchasing through If the oven you receive has any defects, they will exchange it or refund your money with no questions asked.

Just recently picked the smart oven up and am loving it so far.

I was reluctant to drop 250 bucks on a toaster oven, but the wife really wanted a nice counter-top appliance so I bit the bullet and went for it. Super happy I did.

This oven is amazing. It is night and day better than our last one and is super easy to use.

    Highly recommended.

You won’t be so happy you spent $250 when this breaks in 2 years, is out of warranty, and parts to replace (heating elements) have been discontinued.
