Video Overview of the Hamilton Beach 22708
For those that love toasters, but also like the convenience that toaster ovens offer in terms of baking, then the Hamilton Beach 22708 two-in-one toaster and mini oven is the perfect choice. Customers love the compact size and the ability to quickly and easily toast items.
61% of customers gave this toaster oven a rating of 4 or 5 stars. However, most of the criticisms (1 and 2 star reviews) have been recently corrected by Hamilton Beach with a newer and improved model. Therefore, the overall rating should see an increase as most of the negative reviews were related to the old model.
Hamilton Beach has two models that are virtually identical except for the exterior color. The 22708 model comes in black with chrome accents, and the 22703H comes in red with chrome accents. Most customers were happy with the aesthetics and reported that the unit is more attractive than the pictures show.
Toasting & Cooking
As a toaster, the Hamilton Beach 22708 provides a 1.5 inch-wide toasting slot that can fit up to two slices of bread, two frozen waffles, or two halves of a bagel or English muffin.
On average, customers reported that the evenness of toasting was not great, but acceptable. Some of the unevenness comes from the different sizes of bread that people used. For regular size bread or bagels, the toaster works just fine and toasts evenly. For very small pieces of bread, however, it doesn’t handle very well. Also, with larger pieces of bread, the top portion will stick out the top and not get toasted.
This toaster also toasts quickly – around 2 minutes. Therefore, this is one of the fastest toaster ovens out there for toasting.
In terms of baking, this toaster oven doesn’t have a lot of interior space (6.5″ deep by 10.5″ wide by 2″ high). It is great for small items like chicken nuggets, fish sticks, french fries, or two round mini pizzas. Some advertisements state that it can fit up to two slices of pizza, but customers reported that this is generally not the case. Unless the pizza slices are very small, the oven will usually only be able to accommodate one slice.
Using the Hamilton Beach 22708
To toast, simply drop in your bread or bagel, turn the control knob to the desired toast shade, and push down the lever on the side. When the bread is finished it will pop up just as a regular toaster does. The new version of this toaster oven also has a convenient “cancel” button, which you can use to stop the toasting at any time. The new model also has bread guides that automatically center and clamp down on the bread, which makes for more even toasting than the previous version.
To bake an item, all you have to do is slide the cooking function at the top over to bake. This will close and seal the toaster slot and trap the heat. Next, turn the temperature control knob to the desired temperature. That’s it!
It should be noted that this toaster oven doesn’t come with a broil function or oven timer. The timer isn’t really a big issue since it can be easily solved by buying a cheap stand alone timer, but if you’re interested in broiling items, you will have to look for another toaster oven (the Cuisinart TOB-40 could be a good alternative).
The 22708 also comes with a removable crumb tray, but customers reported that the tray only catches some of the crumbs. The majority of crumbs and food particles fall around it and onto the bottom of the toaster. Therefore, this toaster oven can get fairly dirty.
Customer Wishes & Complaints
As mentioned before, most of the complaints people had with this toaster oven were fixed by Hamilton Beach with the newer version. However, the newer version is still without a broil function or an oven timer – both of which consumers would have liked to have seen included.
Additionally, some people mentioned that heat does escape from the top of the toaster oven where the toast slots are located.
Lastly, customers wished the crumb tray and the design of the toaster oven was better for cleaning.
Summary of the Hamilton Beach 22708
The Hamilton Beach 22708 toaster oven is a clever two-in-one appliance. If you just want to make some quick toast or heat something small up, then this would be an excellent option. Its compact design is also great for saving on counter space.
If you like to broil or bake food a lot, however, then we think you would be happier with something like the Cuisinart TOB-40. It toasts and bakes beautifully and is still at a reasonable price.
