A primary draw to the new Waring TCO650 is that it is one of the few toaster ovens without a non-stick interior coating.  Worried about toxic fumes potentially leaking into their food and bodies, health conscious individuals prefer to have their cookware and appliances made of materials other than non-stick.

Another thing that attracts people to this toaster oven is its very high approval rating.  The oven is still fairly new, so there aren’t as many reviews to read as other toaster ovens out there.  However, the ones that are available are very impressive.

At the time of this writing, the Waring TCO650 has a 90% (updated 6/15/13) positive approval rating.  This is very noteworthy considering most toaster ovens that cost less than $100 are filled with negative reviews and low ratings.

However, while this toaster oven is highly rated and has received many amazing reviews, it may not be right for everyone.  Therefore, read our detailed review below to see if it would be a good fit for you.

The Waring TCO650 is housed in stainless steel and customers noted that it seemed sturdy and very durable.  It comes with modern technology, but has a bit of a retro charm.

Toasting & Cooking

There are 5 cooking functions to choose from on the TCO650 model: bake, convection bake, broil, toast, and pizza.

Virtually all reviewers commented that they were very pleased with the cooking results and that the TCO650 heats up fast and cooks evenly.  Therefore, the food is juicy and done on the inside with a nice exterior texture.  Additionally, the oven seems to do a good job of maintaining the set temperature (this is something that many ovens tend to have difficulty doing) as reports indicate that the there is very little degree variance between the temperature displayed and that given by an oven thermometer.

The convection fan works as it should and cooks the food evenly and fast.  Your food will be done faster with the convection fan on, so be aware of that and reduce your cooking time or keep an eye on your food.

The broil function works perfectly and the food turns out great.  However, customers did mention that the temperature is set at 450° and due to this high heat, you must keep an eye on your food to make sure it doesn’t overcook.  Also, there is no way to adjust the broil temperature.

In regard to toasting, it is pretty conclusive that best results are when the toast is placed in the middle rack position.  There are six different toast shades to choose from, so you can experiment to see which one produces the best results for your taste.  However, shade level 3 appears to be most peoples favorite.

Using the Waring TCO650

This digitally controlled oven is easy to operate and use.  There are 3 rack levels to choose from and selecting the functions and times is very simple.

To set the Toast or Bagel function:

  • Press toast or bagel button
  • Turn dial to desired shade level
  • Press start/stop

That is it!

To use the Convection Bake, Bake, or Pizza function:

  • Place rack in desired location
  • Press cooking function: Convection Bake, Bake, or Pizza
  • Turn dial to set temperature (350° is default temp for Convection Bake and Bake, 400° is default temp for Pizza)
  • Press start/stop to begin preheating

When the oven has reached the set temperature, it will beep 4 times. (NOTE: the beeping sound may annoy some people, but it may be disabled by pushing and holding the Toast & Bagel buttons for 5 seconds)

  • Place food on baking pan and insert into oven
  • Push the dial twice to display the time (there is a 2 hour default time if no time is set)
  • Turn the dial to select the hour or press again to display minutes

When the time has finished, the oven will beep and turn itself off.

To use the Broil function is similar to using the other baking options.  Press the Broil function (default temp is 450°) then Press start/stop button to begin preheating (allow 5-7 minutes for oven to preheat).  Once the oven has preheated insert food and push the dial twice to set the time (set the time just as you would to Bake).

The accessories that come with the oven include: 1 broil rack, 1 baking pan, and 1 crumb tray.  Customers reported that they had a bit of a cheap feel to them, but that they liked that all of them were NOT coated in non-stick materials.

Customer Wishes & Complaints

While users loved cooking and toasting with the Waring TCO650, there was one thing that many would like to see changed – the beeping sound.  A lot of people found the alert system or beeping sound to be rather loud and for some it was quite bothersome.  In general, toaster ovens that beep come with mixed reviews.  Some people like the fact that the beep reminds them that their food is ready, and others simply find it annoying.  The good news is that if the sound really bothers you, you may turn it off by pushing and holding the Toast and Bagel buttons for 5 seconds.

Other than the beeping sound, there were very little complaints reported with the oven, which is extremely rare.  The only other thing worth mentioning is that a couple customers wished that an additional oven rack was included.  If you need an extra rack, however, you can always purchase one.

Considering it toasts and cooks excellently, heats up and maintains set temperature well, is digitally controlled for more precise results, is safe to use (no reports of food catching on fire or people burning themselves) and comes without a  non-stick interior, the Waring TCO650 is a great buy.  The main drawback is the loud beeping sound it makes, but it can be turned off, so you really can’t go wrong with this oven.

  • Toasts and bakes great
  • Accurate heating (less than 5° variance)
  • Digitally controlled for more consistent results
  • Front access crumb tray for easy cleaning
  • Automatic shut off
  • One of the only toaster ovens with a NO non-stick coating
  • Fair price considering the cooking results and ease of use
  • Good customer service
  • Highly rated with very few customer complaints
  • 5 year limited warranty

  • Loud alert system, but it may be disabled
  • No auto eject rack

Does this toaster have a 3 prong plug with grounding wire…needed to meet requirements for my workplace.
    Thank you.

  • Dee says:

What is the interior made of?? Can’t find that answer for this model anywhere. Know it’s not “non-stick”, but what IS it? Important to me. Want to purchase, but need to know.

    4 stars

I wanted to buy this but the loud alarm sounds very off putting. Maybe if they make one without the alarm, I will purchase it in future.

    • Brad says:

It is possible to completely turn the alarm off by holding down the toast and bagel buttons at the same time until you hear a single beep. Just google it.

      • Krikx says:

I would have definitely bought this oven if it had a bigger size as well!
One more desirable option would be a light bulb instead of keep using a flash-light.

  • yedda says:

what about aluminum, usually interior of small ovens/toasters are made out of aluminum which is very toxic and cause many serious health conditions related with brain and central nervous system especially such as Parkinson, Alzheimer, ALS, MS etc. Is this made out of quality metal if stainless steel, no, reactive nickel or ceramics etc. I am wondering if this toaster oven interior is aluminum or not.
