If you haven’t purchased a toaster oven in quite some time, you may be a little surprised by the cost of a high-end or quality oven these days.
True, you can still get a quality oven in the mid price range (the Cuisinart TOB-40 or the Waring TCO650 are good options), but for a top of the line oven that cooks great and also has the user-friendly features we all want, the price is something to make you think twice about.
No longer are the days when a good ol’ Black and Decker would last about as long as you will. The quality just isn’t what it used to be…and that goes for most brands.
Yes, the new ovens are more sophisticated and have better technology, but the longevity just isn’t what it used to be. Just spend one minute scanning through the reviews of any oven and you’ll quickly see reports of some aspect of the oven stop functioning in a relatively short period of time.
So, is it worth forking over $150 to $250 for a top-notch oven?
If you are someone who loves cooking and baking or uses a toaster oven frequently, then absolutely splurge and get the best. There really is a big difference in terms of the quality and ease of use with the more expensive ovens. Not only is your food going to turn out much better, but using the oven is going to be much more enjoyable.
Higher end ovens, like those from Breville, use superior technology and have more cooking functions and user-friendly features at your disposal than found on standard ovens. This might not be a big deal for some, but if you use the oven daily, trust me, it is definitely worth the upgrade.
Additionally, going with a more expensive brand gives you a greater chance that your oven is not going to break on you within the first few months, which is quite common in the lower-end models (just read any of the reviews on Amazon). That being said, it is still important to try and get something that comes with a warranty. Even the best of the best are sometimes lemons with defective issues.
On the other hand, if you’re just interested in making some toast in the morning and being able to cook some mini pizzas for the kids after school, then it probably isn’t necessary to shell out all that money. You can find a good little oven for less than $100 that can satisfy most of your cooking needs, and still give you very nice results. Just know, however, that you may have to replace it within six months to a year (depends on model and brand).
